In Gran Canaria there are a lot of beautiful highlights to visit. In this blog we will tell you more about what to visit on the island. There are awesome cities, beaches, landscapes and nature.
The most beautiful highlights of Gran Canaria
Are you looking for nice hotspots? Want to know what to see or do? We listed the most beautiful highlights of Gran Canaria:
- Maspalomas Dunes
- Barranco de las Vacas
- El bufadero de la Garita
- Mirador del Balcón
- Puerto de Mogán
- Los Azulejos
#1 Maspalomas Dunes
The Maspalomas Dunes is a unique nature reserve with sand dunes. It is a very large area, namely 404 hectares in size. It is the perfect place to make a beautiful walk between the dunes. Please note that: it is not allowed to deviate from the paths. There are also camel rides, but we did not ride the camels because of animal welfare.
#2 Barranco de las Vacas
Barranco de las Vacas is a hidden gem of Gran Canaria. This canyon is a bit difficult to find, since you have to climb over a guardrail in a certain bend of the road and follow a path down. We will soon right another blog about how to find this beautiful canyon. In the morning it gets crowded in the canyon, since more tourists found this hotspot already. We recommend going early or a little bit later in the afternoon. At times, the sun shines beautifully into the canyon which leads to a fantastic red glow. This was one of the most beautiful highlights of Gran Canaria.
#3 El Bufadero de la Garita
The first time we visited El Bufadero de la Garita, it was nothing more than just a bit of sea water between rocks. The water was too low to see the beautiful natural phenomenon. However, this blowhole is definitely a must-see! We came back another day and it was totally worth it. We recommend to lookup the water tides on this website and visit the blowhole when the waves are bigger. It looks like a geyser. The power of the sea results in spectacular water fountains. In intervals the water is pushed upwards by every wave, filling up the hole and then receding again.
#4 Mirador del Balcón
This place is an awesome viewpoint on a cliff. It is located at the western edge of the island. There is a balcony, made from glass, where you can stand on and enjoy the Atlantic Ocean beneath you. In addition, on the coast you see the cliffs which looks like the ‘tail of a dragon’. If you are lucky and it is not very cloudy, then you will be able to spot the vulcano el Teide from the island Tenerife.
#5 Puerto de Mogán
Puerto de Mogán was our favorite place. There are many white-colored houses with colored edges, located next to the harbour and beach. It is the perfect place to make some Instagram-worthy photos! Also, there are nice bridges and little canals which is also called as ‘Little Venice’. Furthermore, you can enjoy sea food restaurants at the boulevard.
#6 Los Azulejos
This rock formation is located along the road in the mountains. The name of the rocks is ‘los azulejos’ because of the special colors. You will see different shades, namely blue, green, yellow and red. The colors are a result of oxidation and it offers an incredible view. This is also one of the most beautiful highlights you must visit when going to Gran Canaria.
